Report of the Meeting Held on Thursday 12 March 2015, by Doug Weale

A truly educational and entertaining meeting, Chaired by Ron Sheldrake, on Thursday March 12 focused on an important aspect of public speaking-the Proposal  of Toasts.  After the customary warm-up, Steve Pamphilon, formerly of Toastmasters International, who has recently joined us, gave an instructive talk on the correct protocol of Toasting and Response.  

There followed examples of traditional toasts at wedding ceremonies, delivered by Deborah Percy and Doug Weale, representing the bride and best man, respectively. Both speeches exemplified the requisite qualities-not least that most vital factor-humour.     

Evaluation, the process by which we learn, was given by Gary Costain and Trevor Kenning: each drawing attention to the points deserving of praise ,  together with those which could be improved upon.  

An opportunity was then afforded to Bernie Morgan to rehearse her speech to be delivered at the forthcoming District AGM and the penultimate round of the annual national Speech competition, joining our President as he competes in Evaluation and Topics: a source of pride for the Club that we will be so well represented.   

The impromptu speaking session, a regular feature of our agendas, conducted on this occasion by Club President, Trevor Kenning, continued with the theme of Toasting; a series of fictional subjects were responded to in the format of a Toast. This proved to be both entertaining and an opportunity to put into practice what had previously been demonstrated. With an imaginative short speech of the two minutes specified, Bernie Morgan was, by popular vote, awarded the Topics  Trophy.  

Evaluation of the session by Gary Costain, and finally of the evening as a whole by Bernie Morgan concluded a most successful agenda; maintaining the high standards of education and enjoyment in keeping with the Association to which we belong.
