Report of the Meeting Held on Thursday 22 January 2015, by Doug Weale

Dr. John Beale chaired the meeting on Thursday 22nd January; confident and successful in his first assignment of this duty. Chairmanship is just one of many aspects of the art of speaking to which as an affiliate of the Association of Speakers Clubs we pursue. Following his opening words of welcome, he conducted the traditional warm- up, affording all present the opportunity to speak briefly.

The main objective of this meeting was to give our representatives in the Area round of the National Speech Competition, a chance to rehearse their entry; they will face winning entries from speakers in other Kent based clubs, and be judged by required high standards, for progress to further stages towards the National final.

Steve Pamphilon, a recently enlisted member, gave a most entertaining story based on the famous Brief Encounter. Bernie Morgan, then, gave an equally engaging speech, in her inimitable style, adding to the entertainment of the evening. These two members received positive and encouraging evaluations from Trevor Kenning and Doug Weale respectively, in preparation for the Area competition.

The impromptu speaking session, which occupies the second half of each meeting, was chaired by Deborah Percy, affording a challenge and further entertainment for all present. Ron Sheldrake in his evaluation was complimentary of her unusual theme and gave individual appraisals to the responses of all members. The Topics Trophy, by popular vote was awarded to Trevor Kenning for an imaginative response on a subject from science fiction.

Vice President Garry Costain, always to be relied upon for an in depth and perceptive evaluation, was approving of the evaluative advice given to the speech contestants ;his appraisal of the evening as a whole outlined the educative value of evaluation, by which we all progress. He voiced particular commendation of the chairmanship of John Beale and the vital part played in this role.

We look forward to   a successful result at the Area competition and to a continued programme in pursuit of our aim, with a further variety of agendas: in the near future we are extending-as always-invitation to visit any of our meetings.
