The meeting on Thursday 9th October was Chaired by our President Trevor Kenning, who with characteristic efficiency and imagination introduced the audience of members and visitors to a wide range of educative and exceedingly entertaining examples of the art of speaking.
Affiliated to the Association of Speakers Clubs, Thanet S.C. represents an eager support of the Association’s principles: to improve the art of speaking in public, and to promote, encourage and develop proficiency in the spoken word.
Two fine speeches, by Garry Costain and Ron Sheldrake, each exemplified the values which inform, entertain and inspire a listening audience. These were followed by impromptu speaking, which is a regular feature of our agendas. Deborah Percy, chairing the session for the first time offered an intriguing theme, Greek mythology.
The subject appeared profound until we were invited to respond with modern interpretation. Retired medical practitioner, Dr, John Beale drew on his real life experience in his modern interpretation of the Titan Atlas holding the globe on his shoulders, as he recalled being called to a Welsh mine which had collapsed. A strong young miner stood arched with his shoulders in support of the roof as his comrades crawled to safety. Finally, totally exhausted, he collapsed, crushed to death. The Topics Trophy was unanimously awarded to John for a fine example of an imaginative impromptu speech, which makes the “Topics Session” so enjoyable.
Our membership is from a broad and diverse range, not all have such a source of material, but we inevitably spend more time listening than speaking; the listening is inspirational, entertaining, and inevitably we all improve as we endeavour to emulate.
Evaluation , the process of our learning and improvement, whereby the points for improvement are, together with accomplished finer points, are defined by designated fellow members and put into subsequent practice, was during the meeting given to all speakers. A general evaluation of the meeting as a whole paid tribute to the Chairmanship by both President and Deborah respectively, in conducting a meeting in which the criteria of educational standards enjoyment and success were all achieved.
