On Thursday 11th September at The Royal Temple Yacht Club, the first meeting of a new season will be held following a summer recess. We remain dedicated to the principles of the Association of Speakers Clubs to which we are affiliated: To practise and improve the art of speaking in public.
Without the cost of professional tuition, we enjoy success by a procedure which has stood the test of time: a continual practice and improvement, within a small, encouraging and friendly environment, comprised of fellow members, whose own experience and success has been attained by a similar method: evaluation.
For each and every speech, an appraisal is given by a fellow member from the audience, drawing attention to the factors in the speech deserving compliment, and to points which could, expressed by this evaluation, be improved. Such improvements are implemented by practice, as we proceed through the manual addressing the basic qualities it outlines; our speeches gradually accumulating those qualities defined by the ASC and recognised in good public speaking.
So-to the new season, in which we plan, as always, agendas of instructional value and enjoyment. We will host our neighbouring clubs at an Open Evening; we will compete, on friendly terms for individual recognition, and as a Club team for the annual Hopper Cup Trophy. At the nucleus of our progress will be our President, Trevor Kenning, and fellow members of long standing, sharing their experience gained from many years’ experience.
The club will host a dinner serving one of the most notable aspects of our art- after-dinner speaking enjoyed by all present-not least -by the speakers themselves. An innovation to our programme which we believe will be of immense general interest, will be a meeting devoted to speeches at an occasion prominent in most families, at which the standard of speaking can make or break the success of the event: a family wedding.
Visitors are welcome to attend our meetings, we shall, as always, endeavour to attract new members. Membership begins with a series of visits; without any obligation, but to sit and listen.
