Thanet Speakers Club Report – 14th July 2011 (by Doug Weale)

Vice President Bernie Morgan welcomed a specially invited guest speaker to the meeting on July 14th.  Guilda Waugh, an actress of great standing and experience on the live stage and television enthralled club members by the depth of knowledge and valuable instructive advice.

In her seminar, covering everything from correct breathing, diction, intonation, projection, variation, volume of voice, rapport and eye contact with the audience – all vital qualities of the good speaker. Anecdotes from her career, together with invitations throughout her address, to participate, added to the entertainment and educational content.

After the  interval, there followed a session of impromptu speaking, chaired by Margaret Jones, who skilfully offered “topics” to be responded to, with no preparation; a contribution to the intellectual challenge and enjoyment.  The trophy for best response was awarded to Bernie Morgan, who in pursuit of a career in comedy-considered by many, as the ultimate achievement of public speaking-has to her immense pride, been invited to the Edinburgh Festival in August.

Visitors are welcome to all our meetings at the Royal Temple Yacht Club on the second and fourth Thursdays monthly.
