Further to the important season of competitive speaking, the meeting on November 24th chaired by Kathleen Smith was devoted to our Evaluation and Topics Competitions.

Kathleen Smith, our enthusiastic President has resolved to ensure that the club has the best possible chance of success in the forthcoming Hopper Cup competition, which we host next year. With this in mind the team was selected in good time for composition and reheasal in our meeting on Thursday 10th November.

Seminars at Association of Speakers Clubs National Conference (April 2012)

For some years, people have been asking for a return to holding seminars and workshops at Conference. In April 2012 it is intended to do so, but we need to know what people want.

There will be one Development and one Education Seminar. For the Education one, there are two suggestions so far – The Use of Powerpoint or Speaking with Humour. Which would you prefer?

With exemplary chairmanship by Trevor Kenning, the meeting on October 27th, attended by club members and several visitors, demonstrated the art of speaking as practised following the standards of the Association of Speakers Clubs to which we belong. The meeting on October 13th demonstrated all aspects of public speaking which is practised at the club. Chairman, Ron Sheldrake master-minded the agenda, beginning with our enthusiastic President, Kathleen Smith, in a brief Business Session outlining her plan for the annual Hopper Cup Team.

There followed, after a traditional warm-up, two set speeches delivered in compliance with The Speakers Guide Book, which conducts all members through the basic qualities of public speaking. In a well-attended meeting on the 22nd September, Chaired by Ben Harris, the Club played host to the District President, Cliff Earl: three visitors, were also made welcome, and enjoyed listening to examples of the art of public speaking. Firstly by Bernie Morgan, fresh from a coveted appearance at the Edinburgh Festival, delivered a speech in which she exemplified the use of humour-her own personal favourite attribute of the art practised at fortnightly meetings: her fine speech was followed by an instructive demonstration by Ian Lockyer in the skilled use of a microphone, often necessary in public speaking; each was evaluated, by Ron Sheldrake and Margaret Jones, respectively, offering both complimentary and constructive comment, which would be absorbed and put to effect in future progress through the Manual; the instructive handbook by which each member is guided in a programmed course of set speeches.
