The Speech Contest , chaired by Vice President Garry Costain, was the main item on the agenda of Thursday December 11 th, providing excellent speeches on a diversity of subjects , offering entertainment to the audience, combined with a challenge to the judges .
Competitive speaking is encouraged by the Association of Speakers Clubs to which we are affiliated, and gives an added feature to our programme, by which we are given the opportunity to be compared with fellow members of the Association in a series of competitions with other clubs.
The speeches of contestants exemplified qualities encouraged in good speech outlined in our guidebook; the varied subjects, together with enthusiasm for a competitive spirit contributed to a most successful meeting, giving the Club immense pleasure from the participation of not only members, but visitors also.
Four members, Bernie Morgan, Steve Pamphilon- having at this meeting established his membership-John Beale and Ben Harris will all be in line for selection as representatives of our club in the next round of the competition.
Our President, Trevor Kenning then hosted the impromptu speaking -Topics- session; always a challenge to the speaker in response to subjects on a chosen theme. Members and visitors alike rose to the challenge of the subject on everyone’s mind; a diversity of matters, each one near to the heart of the Season of Good Cheer with widely differing responses. In his general evaluation of the meeting Doug Weale expressed the delight in the attendance of visitors, the result of a successful publicity campaign, which will continue, attracting visitors to our meetings.
The Club will resume, as usual, on the second and fourth Thursdays monthly, January 8th being the first of the New Year, when what aspires to be an opportunity to practise a skill which is at the very heart of speaking in public-a Cogers Debate-come and join us ! Visitors will continue to be made welcome to all our meetings; for details please contact Doug Weale on 01843 592221 or d.weale2012@btinternet .com. or visit. www.thanetspeakers.org.uk
