Report of the Meeting Held on 23 January 2014, By Doug Weale

A hugely successful meeting, chaired by President Bernie Morgan, concluded a series of annual competitions. The Speech Contest, conducted by Trevor Kenning, who, for the guidance of all present- competitors, judges, fellow members and visitors-outlined the criteria required. As always, a wide variety of subjects were on offer by those competing; proving to be most entertaining, and demonstrating the qualities in the art of speaking as defined by the Association to which our Club is an affiliate, and which  we practise at our regular meetings.

Education Director, Frances Pointer, assisted by Kathleen Smith, following  due deliberation, awarded the prestigious Speech Contest Trophy to Garry Costain, adding to his previous prize for evaluation: he, together with John Beale and Ron Sheldrake, qualify-in respective titles- to represent the Club in a further contest with Kent -based clubs.

The agenda then moved on to the customary impromptu speaking session; everyone present participating in a vital skill, both challenging and enjoyable. Chaired by Doug Weale, responses were invited to “topics” in everyday life. Ron Sheldrake -by popular vote, given the more modest -but none the less coveted, Topics Trophy, for best response, in which he displayed an intelligent and pertinent riposte in the two minutes allowed.

A first attempt at evaluation by John Beale won the approval by the subsequent general appraisal by our Education Director; having displayed those qualities which form the basis of our learning; compliments for essentials and the advice for improvement. The meeting, embracing the competition, had proved successful: all the contributory factors displayed, augur well for the Club and it`s future in pursuit of the aim inspired by the Association of Speakers Clubs.

Visitors are welcome to all meetings; the next, February 13th, is devoted to the reading of poetry & prose, adding to the variety of our agendas: for details please contact Doug Weale 01843 592221 or d.weale2012@btinternet.com or visit www.thanetspeakers.org.uk

Report of the Meeting Held on 9 January 2014, By Doug Weale

Ben Harris chaired the meeting on 9th January, to determine who will represent us in the next round of two of three annual competitions – Evaluation & Impromptu Speaking (Topics) – each a vital quality of the Art of Speaking as practised in our Club, which is affiliated to the Association of Speakers Clubs.

Each of these competitions involved an added responsibility of planning: the key auxiliary figures of judges and time-keepers being needed, as well as those wishing to compete – not to mention the “Target Speaker” to be the subject of evaluation.

Doug Weale, assigned the task of the first of the two competitions, paid tribute to the expertise of Trevor Kenning as chief Judge, who in turn expressed his own appreciation of the skilful assistance of most recently joined, Deborah Percy.

Education Director, Frances Pointer, delivered the speech for evaluation –  a most entertaining demonstration of the use of vocabulary and word-pictures – the B6 in the guide book, a test of skilful appraisal by the competitors.

Garry Costain adjudged the winner, second place being awarded to Ron Sheldrake, who then proceeded to oversee the Topics Competition overcoming the same difficulties as described above.

Joining the two successful winners of evaluation, at the Kent Area meeting, will be John Beale and Doug Weale. In his General Evaluation of the meeting as a whole, Trevor Kenning paid tribute to the contribution by Frances Pointer and Ben Harris and the enthusiasm of all club members present.
