Video Techniques by Keith Davis

Keith Davis’ blog Espeaking has a post about the use of video which while not in the main stream of Speakers Clubs activities may well be of great interest to those of us who are toying with the idea of entering next year’s Online Speech Competition.

Many of the posts on Keith’s blog are well worth reading.

ASC NATIONAL CONFERENCE 2012 TO BE HELD IN SOUTH WEST DISTRICT – IN CARDIFF

Among the bustle of Conference 2011 in Edinburgh, the fiercely fought competitions, the energetic AGM and the glamour of the Gala Dinner, there was an oasis of calm. At the side of the conference hall, but by no means side-lined was the stall promoting next year’s conference – in Cardiff.

Bristling with all things Welsh – a vase of daffodils, leeks, pamphlets about Cardiff and the wider Welsh countryside, and not least, copious quantities of splendid Welsh Cakes! Like a magnet, conference delegates were drawn to this display and many of them signed up to receive further information about next year’s conference.

Plans are well under way – the venue will be The Marriott Hotel in the heart of the city of Cardiff, just 3 minutes walk from the station (honestly!). Workshops are being planned and our Conference Convenor (Helena Dyer) has promised that this year there will be dancing! For spouses, partners, friends the whole of the City of Cardiff spreads out before them once walking out of the hotel. The Castle is just 10minutes walk away and a fantastic shopping experience for your indulgence lies just across the pedestrianised road!

Make a note of the date now – 27th-29th April 2012 – keep up to date with newsletters and add your name to the list of recipients by contacting our Conference Convenor on helena.dyer@googlemail.com

You can be sure of a warm welcome to South Wales.

Thanet Speakers Club Report –12th May 2011

Thanet Speakers club held their Hopper’s team practice on the 12th May in preparation for the Hoppers Cup competition that will take place in Canterbury at the start of June.

A new approach to the impromptu speech section followed where speakers had to pick out their topics from lucky dip style bags.  The theme for the topics involved speaking in a style of a fellow member or a well known public figure on subjects ranging from cabbage fields to smelly socks.

The winner of the impromptu trophy was won by Margaret Jones who had the audience in stitches with her aristocratic talk on belly buttons Our newest member Martin took second place with a comical response to smelly socks speaking in the style of Margarat Thatcher

The business section involved the stepping down of the clubs educational director due to new commitments.  Andrew Thomson dedication to his role of taking care of the clubs educational needs will be sadly missed. So on behalf of all at Speakers a big thankyou for all the hard work you have given to the club over the years.

Thanet Speakers Club Report –28th April 2011

It was a delight and honor to welcome Ambassador Speakers Club members and other guests at Thanet Speakers Club meeting on the 28th of April. The evening began with a fun impromptu debate on the topic of alternative parliamentary voting which challenged participants to persuade the for, or against vote through persuasive speech. The public speaking exercise was such a success that a draw was declared.

This was proceeded by the impromptu speech half which invites those wishing to take part to take the floor, and speak on a given topic. The impromptu theme was bird quotes chosen by Francis Pointer the topics chair. All participated including a first time visiting quest who engaged the audience with a cautionary tale of an eagle’s revenge. The topic trophy was won by Trevor Kenning.
