Thanet Speakers Club Report, Evaluation Competition (November 25th 2010)

Thanet Speakers club held their annual Speech Evaluation competition on the 25th November. This yearly competition involves members evaluating an ASC speech under national competition rules. The speech used for the evaluation competition was delivered by our youngest member Ben Harris.  The speech was a B3 which requires effective use of gestures.   All evaluators passed Ben’s assignment with acknowledgement, and areas for improvement. The winner of the Evaluation competition was Margaret Jones with Kathleen Smith 2nd, and Francis Pointer third. These competitors will now participate in the regional Speech evaluation competition held in February 2011.

The seriousness of the first part of the meeting was lightened up by the topics session in the second half. Margaret Jones chose after dinner speeches which facilitated entertaining, and humorous responses. The winner of the impromptu speaking was Doug Weale who gave a captivating, and moving response to his topic.

Thanet Speakers Club Meetings are held fortnightly on Thursday evenings at the Royal Temple Yacht Club, Ramsgate at 8.00 p.m.  For further details contact Ian Lockyer (Thanet Speakers Club Publicity Officer) on 01843 592785 or 07775815500 or via email at info@easimarketing.com. Speaker of the year 2010

Association of Speakers Clubs members and guests had a wonderful time at the Gala Dinner in Birmingham city centre on 6/11/10 to celebrate the nomination of BBC TV’s Nick Owen as the ASC Speaker of the Year. Many local clubs were represented at the event as well as members and guests from all over the country. They enjoyed an evening of celebration of public speaking skills, both featuring the ASC’s own national champion and Nick Owen himself.

Nick regaled all  present with stories of his journalistic and TV career, interspersed of course with a selection of his trade mark corny jokes! He certainly proved himself as a worthy choice for this prestigious award as Speaker of the Year 2010.

In addition to a fantastic evening of speech making, the evening raised a wonderful ?  £1600 for Nick’s chosen charity Birmingham St Marys Hospice.

Thanet Speakers Club Report, Topics Competition (November 11th 2010)

Topics or Impromptu Speaking is one of the most exciting forms of Public Speaking and every year the Association of Speakers Clubs runs a national competition to find the best impromptu speaker in the UK.  Thanet Speakers Club organised their local heat on November 11th  2010.  President, Doug Weale hosted this meeting and got everyone into the swing of impromptu speaking by asking them to speak for a minute on a single word subject.  Everyone was up to this task which provided useful practice for the coming competition.

It was really pleasing to see that nearly everyone from the club entered the Impromptu completion which saw some fascinating and interesting speeches.  The audience voted Trevor Kenning as winner and Kathleen Smith as runner up.  Both Trevor and Kathleen will go on to represent Thanet at the county competitions.

The second half of the meeting was the standard club impromptu topics contest which was hosted by France Pointer.  She asked members of the audience to speak on the subject of philosophy.  There was a three way tie for this competition with Ian Lockyer winning the club trophy.

Strapped for time, because so much had been fitted into the session, Andrew Thomson gave a brief yet concise evaluation of Frances topics session.  Feedback and advice about the whole evening was given by the General Evaluator, Margaret Jones.
